It's an unfortunate fact that between 30-50% of all website visitors will "bounce" within seconds of hitting a website.  If visitors cannot immediately ascertain that they are on a site that offers them the information they are looking for, they also immediately click back to the search results page and try the next site on the list.

A properly constructed landing pages provide that extra incentive to "act now", thus earning you a return on your investment. Your entire site is still available as a resource for the visitor who requires more information, but an effective landing page will increase conversion rates because the visitor won't be required to search further.
